Celebrity Gogglebox star Shaun Ryder has opened up about how Ozempic helped him lose the weight he gained during lockdown, attributing his weight gain to the side effects of his underactive thyroid.
Shaun Ryder, the beloved Happy Mondays frontman, candidly discussed his struggle with weight gain during lockdown in a recent interview with OK! The 62-year-old rocker, who is also featured in Channel 4’s new series Celebrity Send Off, shared that he had ballooned to 15 stone due to a persistent health issue.
Shaun revealed that he has been using Ozempic, a medication typically prescribed for diabetes and weight control, to shed the pounds he had gained over the past couple of years. He admitted that losing the lockdown weight had been a significant challenge, despite his efforts to stay active through cycling.
“It was so hard to get off what I put on in lockdown. I ballooned up to 15 stone and just couldn’t get rid of it, even with cycling. I got on Ozempic and it’s great!”
Shaun explained.

He further disclosed that his underactive thyroid made weight loss particularly difficult. This condition, which can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and memory problems, occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones.
Shaun acknowledged that if he were to stop taking Ozempic, he would likely regain the weight. He shared:
“I don’t eat that much anyway, but because I’ve got an underactive thyroid, it makes you blow up. I’ve got no side effects and I don’t know anyone who gets them, and there are loads of people I know who are on it now.”
When asked about Ozempic’s popularity among celebrities, Shaun laughed and said, “I think so, but I’m not going to start naming names!”
Previously, Shaun had mentioned his use of Ozempic last year, revealing that he had already lost two stone.
“I think I was 16 stone and now I’m down to 14 because of those jabs you stick in your belly that they say the Kardashians are on? Ozempic. I’ve been on them and I’ve lost two stone.”
He had confessed in an interview with The Sun .

He also shared that his participation in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’s all-stars series made him realize the importance of taking care of his health. He recalled:
“The first time I did it in 2010, I didn’t want to come home. I would have stayed in the jungle like some Vietnam veteran. I did it again 12 years later, but my hips and everything in my back had gone. I was a bit wounded. When you’ve got a false hip and you’ve got to get in a hammock, it’s not really good.”
Now a regular on Celebrity Gogglebox, Shaun appears on the show alongside his friend and fellow Happy Mondays bandmate Bez. The duo films the show in Shaun’s Salford home, with Bez traveling from his house in Wales each week for the shoot.
“But he’s usually coming from somewhere else anyway because he is out every night DJing and he loves it,” Shaun said. “He is an unbelievable geezer. I’ve told him he has to calm down, or he will drop dead one day.”
Celebrity Send Off, which features Shaun planning his own hypothetical last hurrah with Bez, will be available to stream from Thursday, August 1st, on Channel 4.
